By Tengku Noor Shamsiah Tengku Abdullah

SINGAPORE, Dec 10 (Bernama) — Twenty-four Indian nationals were charged in court Tuesday, for alleged involvement in the Little India riot on Sunday night.

n a statement, a foreign affairs ministry spokesman said the ministry was working closely with the Indian high commissioner to facilitate consular access and support for their nationals, including legal representation.

Separately, the police in their Facebook posting said: “As of Tuesday at 3:20am, further investigations revealed that two more male subjects, an Indian national and another with Singaporean PR (permanent resident status), were not involved in the riot at Little India.”

On Sunday night, a riot broke out in Little India, following a fatal accident involving a 33-year-old Indian national.

Ten police officers were injured. They included five auxiliary police personnel who are Malaysians with permanent resident status in Singapore.

Five police vehicles, an ambulance and several private vehicles were also damaged in the incident.

Little India is noted for foreign workers from the Indian sub-continent congregating during weekends.

Sunday’s incident was the first in Singapore’s history since the week-long communal riots in 1969.

In that incident, four people died and 80 were injured.
