“Ah Boys to Men” will be back on set — the theatre set, that is.

And this time, the star cast will not only act but also sing and dance. Both parts 1 and 2 of the hit movie are being adapted into a musical and most of the original cast will return.

Main stars Tosh Zhang, Wang Wei Liang, Maxi Lim and Noah Yap will return as Sergeant Alex On, Recruits Lobang, Wayang King and I.P Man respectively.

But Joshua Tan, who played recruit Ken Chow, will be replaced by Benjamin Kheng of local band The Sam Willows due to the former’s overseas study commitments.

New cast member Kheng admits to being a “pretty big fanboy” of the movies based on the adventures of army recruits doing National Service.

“It’s a huge honor to work with these guys and see what amazing actors they are,” he said.

Other additions to the cast include Chua En Lai and Patricia Mok. Mok will play Recruit I.P Man’s girlfriend, Ayumi Xiaxue.

Written by Goh Boon Teck, the musical will be directed by Beatrice Chia-Richmond while songs will be written by Don Richmond. Cast member Irene Ang and film director Jack Neo will serve as executive producers.

For Neo, the musical was a dream come true. He said “There’s a new scriptwriter, new director, and I think they hit all the right notes.”

Cast member Lim calls the musical Ah Boys to Men 4, as in 4-D. “You get to watch, you get to feel, you get to hear, you get to touch, you get to smell,” he quipped.

Ah Boys to Men: The Musical will be in English, Chinese and Hokkien with subtitles. It will run from April 18 to 27 at the Resorts World Theatre. Ticket prices range between $ 38 to $ 128.
