S$1.4m awarded to 41 community-driven heritage projects – TODAYonline

SINGAPORE – Some S$ 1.4 million has been awarded to an inaugural batch of 41 community-driven projects under a grant scheme from the National Heritage Board.

Those behind the projects include individuals, groups comprising academics and students, interest groups, companies, societies and associations.

Two types of grants were awarded under the scheme, the Heritage Participation Grant and the Heritage Project Grant.

The smaller of the two grants, the Heritage Participation Grant. is meant to support a wider range of projects that cover various forms and areas of heritage, including ethnic customs and traditions, food culture and built heritage.

The 26 recipients of the participation grant include Project Lee Dai Soh, which used integrated multimedia channels, such as app, e-book and website, to present the life and work of the late storyteller. The project was put together by a group of Ngee Ann Polytechnic students.

Another project from students of Nanyang Technological University sought to generate interest in heritage games through viral marketing, a website and an event.

The bigger of the two grants, the Heritage Project Grant, is meant to support projects with the potential to make a significant and lasting impact.

Projects which were awarded the grant include a quirky one that commemorates Singapore’s school uniforms through photography.

Both grants come under the Heritage Grant Scheme, which was introduced on Aug 1 last year.

The scheme seeks to promote active community participation in creating heritage content through research, documentation and creative ways of presentation.

A fund pool of S$ 5 million has been set aside for the scheme. The money is to be disbursed from FY2013 to FY2016. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
