SINGAPORE: Imagine being transported to simpler times when games didn’t require electronic parts.
Well, that’s how some 800 residents in the Tanjong Pagar-Tiong Bahru community chose to celebrate National Day – through a carnival showcasing kampung games.
The multi-racial carnival is part of the community’s National Day fringe activities.
Held at the former Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, one of the highlights included kampong games designed to encourage old-fashioned values like patience and cooperation.
Around 30 cars also took part in a car boot sale for charity.
Other fringe activities included henna art, rainbow Chinese calligraphy and face painting.
The carnival aims to bring multi-generational families and all races together to celebrate National Day.
Senior Minister of State for Law and Education, Ms Indranee Rajah, who is also the grassroots advisor for Tanjong Pagar GRC Grassroots Organisations, said: “With all the divisions, the strife, the hatred and the tension that you have around the world, Singapore is very fortunate for our racial and religious harmony.
“We should always remain a beacon of hope for where people of different backgrounds can come together, live peacefully, have hope and opportunity irrespective of their race, language, religion (or) cultural background.”
