Thai political protests paused for water festival

Both antigovernment protesters and government supporters temporarily stopped their demonstrations on Sunday as the country celebrated the Songkran water festival.

The antigovernment protest leader, Suthep Thaugsuban, announced the suspension of rallies from Sunday to Tuesday in order to let Thais celebrate the festival marking the traditional Thai new year.

Suthep also vowed to intensify the rallies aimed at ousting caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra after the festival.
